Valentype 2011 | The Winners

Handpicked Typefaces | Yves Peters | February 21, 2011

Before we reveal the winners, allow me to remind everyone that strictly speaking Valentype is not so much a pure design contest. We asked for love declarations, and this was of primary concern for the four jury members. To be honest, personally I consider a simple “I love you because you’re beautiful” a cop-out. So I asked the jury to favour wit and inventiveness. A well-designed image was a bonus, but whoever managed to cleverly use the typeface name, its concept or design, the general perception of the type style etc. received a good score. Also creatively playing with the general idea of a Valentine’s note or love declaration was a clear plus.

Just like last year the jury was composed of FontShop Germany CEO Jürgen Siebert, FontFont marketing director Ivo Gabrowitsch, myself, and my partner-in-type-geekery Stephen Coles, who rejoined our little club for the occasion. Each one of us compiled a Top 10, and the added scores resulted in five clear winners – the five runners-up only had half the score. Here they are, in no particular order (chronologically):

28 | Nina Stössinger (Basel, Switzerland) loves Parry

37 | Gerhard Großmann (Regensburg, Germany) loves FF Quadraat

49 | Paul Hunt (San Jose, CA, USA) loves Auto 3

52 | Maurice Meilleur (Champaign, IL, USA) loves Arnhem

58 | Tiffany Wardle (San Jose, CA, USA) loves Regime

Congratulations to the five winners; send us an e-mail detailing what four weights of the typeface you wish to receive, and we’ll get back to you with instructions.

Thanks to everyone for participating. We’ve had 40% more entries than in 2009, with many very good ones. I think next year we will run a Valentype contest as well, hopefully with even more foundries participating. Until then, keep on loving type.

  1. Congratulation to all the winners!
    @Nina: My uncontested favorite!!!
@Tiffany: Fulfilled love is the ideal substitute for prozac. ;) Congrats, I love your love declaration!
The ladies definitely stay ahead of the pack.

  2. Yay thanks :-) :-) I’m blushing over here. And I’m a little worried that I’ll never get anything done now that I’ll be able to play with that happy ear all the time 8-)

Seriously, Yves & Co., thank you so much for putting this together, and thanks everyone for playing; it’s been great fun. And congratulations to the others! (My own favorite of these is Tiffany’s – very clever.)

  4. Wow! Thanks to Yves and the rest of the jury, and congrats to Nina, Gerhard, Paul, and Tiffany. And thanks again, Yves, for running the contest.

  5. @Ruben David Marques: It is almost a shame you submitted three entries, because each one of yours was selected by a different judge and received a respectable amount of points. If you had only one entry you could very well have been amongst the five winners.

Personally I really liked your love declaration for Williams Caslon, as it cleverly played on the old adage “When in doubt, use Caslon”. And your hand written rendition is very beautiful.

  6. @Nina: Everyone was charmed by your naughty/cute approach, and the endearing simplicity of your concept.

  7. @Tiffany: How you incorporated all those typeface names in a logical, consistent stream of thought was nothing short of epic. My personal favourite. : )

  8. This was a lot of fun. I’m excited to have been chosen with Nina, Paul, Maurice, and Gerhard. There were so many that I thought would win! I couldn’t have chosen, hats off to the judges.

Thanks, Yves and Nina. It is always nice to have peers appreciate one’s sense of humor.

  9. Thank you for the creative challenge! I’m very happy to be amongst the winners. This makes me very proud because the other contributions were particularly absolutely great! ❦ Congratulations to you Tiffany, Maurice, Paul and Nina!

And I’ve learned something: The best ideas come just a minute before you fall asleep. So always have pen & paper near your bed ☺

  11. Thanks, Yves! That actually makes me very happy!

I also like to play Euromillions three times… maybe this week I should try just once, then. :P
