PVP Makes Fun of Font Porn

    Oops! | Yves Peters | July 3, 2013

Sometimes it is reassuring to realise that, no, we are not alone. Yesterday PVP acknowledged every typophile’s excitement about, and even – dare I say? – obsession with, curvaceous character shapes and luscious letter forms, leering at ligatures. The webcomic which usually offers a funny, warm, and occasionally hilarious look at the everyday goings-on at the editorial office of a gaming magazine, made the third typography reference in its publishing history. Probably playing off the title of Simon Garfield’s popular typography book, Just My Type gives a knowing wink at what could best be described as “font porn”. I think most of us recognise the look on Jade’s face when her Mac-addicted designer husband utters that last phrase…

By the by, this reminded me of that episode when Typophile went offline and was replaced by a chat forum for a couple of weeks in the early 2000’s. One night when my then-wife suddenly came home I told my fellow Typophiles “Sorry people, I need to shut this window and quickly open some porn site. My wife cannot know I have been chatting about typography all this time.”

The connected script spelling out “Font Bordello” so tastefully is James T. Edmonson’s Wisdom Script.
